- Definition: Insufficient PTH Secretion
- Can Cause Significant Hypocalcemia
- Causes:
- Postoperative from Thyroid or Parathyroid Surgery (Most Common)
- Often Transient but Can Be Permanent
- Autoimmune
- Genetic
- Postoperative from Thyroid or Parathyroid Surgery (Most Common)
- Diagnosis/Labs:
- Low PTH
- Low Calcium
- High Phosphate
- Treatment: Calcium & Vitamin D Supplementation
- Recombinant Human PTH (rhPTH) May Assist in Long-Term Management of Chronic Disease
Pseudohypoparathyroidism
- Definition: Hereditary Inadequate Response to PTH
- Resistance Largely Occurs in the Kidneys
- Mutations: GNAS or STX16
- Albright Hereditary Osteodystrophy
- A Group of Symptoms Associated with Pseudohypoparathyroidism
- Presentation: Short Stature, Obese, Round Face & Brachydactyly (Shortened Digits)
- More Common in Females (2:1)
- Labs:
- Low Calcium
- High Phosphorous
- High PTH
- Treatment: Calcium & Vitamin D Supplementation
