About Us

The Operative Review of Surgery (The O.R.) is an award winning educational resource dedicated to the practice of surgery. We are surgeons committed to providing the most effective, up-to-date, and comprehensive material for residents, students, and practicing surgeons.

As surgical interns, we were dissatisfied with the quality of the available review resources. Textbooks can provide great reads on specific topics, but have become antiquated. They require significantly more energy to process, written in a bloated long-text format, they are thick and bulky masses making them difficult to take on the go or access as needed, and they seem to constantly release newer editions thus making the copy you purchased out-of-date after only a short while. Review books were old, outdated, and filled with inaccurate information. Other websites did have some good content, but many were difficult to navigate, most required an individual access, and none were dedicated to surgery. The most frustrating thing, however, was the cost of everything. We decided to create something better.

The O.R. started as a manuscript for a dedicated ABSITE review, but rapidly grew well beyond that. After years of creating content, the program officially launched in 2021-2022. It has continued to grow with over 700 review articles covering the entire field of surgery. The program is being used throughout the US and in over 80 countries throughout the globe.

We are a team with dozens of residents and physicians working together to make this program a success. The countless words of encouragement and residents contacting us to let us know how the program has helped them makes it all worthwhile. In 2023 we were awarded with the ACGME David C. Leach Award for innovation in medical education.
