The Operative Review of Surgery (The O.R.) now publishes peer-reviewed articles throughout the entire field of surgery. We are an award winning program dedicated to surgical education.

Topic Approval
- Before Starting, Email Us to Confirm the Topic: submissions@operativereview.com
- For Ideas, Navigate Through Our Subject Pages
- Completed Peer-Reviewed Articles will Have an Author and Publication Information in the Title Heading
- Any Topic Related to Surgery Will Be Considered
- We Can Provide Direction if You Would Like to Write an Article but Are Unsure what Topic to Pursue
Submission and Peer-Review
- Topic Should Be Approved Before Submission
- Email the Manuscript and Any Associated Material to: submissions@operativereview.com
- The Manuscript Will Undergo A Thorough Peer-Review Among Our Editors, Topic Contributors, and Volunteer Reviewers
- The Manuscript Will Be Sent Back for Any Necessary Revisions
- Upon Acceptance of Revisions, the Manuscript Will Be Sent for Publication
Publication
- Once Approved, the Article Will Be Published in 1-2 Weeks
- There are No Article Processing Charges (APC)
Rights
- All Articles are Published in an Open Access Format
- Published Articles Become the Property of The Operative Review of Surgery and May Not Be Published Elsewhere Without Written Permission from The Operative Review of Surgery
- Unauthorized Use of the Program’s Name, Logo, or Any Content for Commercial Purposes is Not Permitted by the O.R.
Future Changes
- The O.R. Reserves the Right to Make Corrections, Updates, or Changes to Published Articles at Anytime
- Future Changes Will Be Noted in the Heading of Each Article
- Prior Versions Will Be Available Upon Request
Content/Format
Content
- Content is Written in Bullet-Point Format, Not Paragraphs
- The Goal is to Create Well-Written Concise High-Yield Reviews for Busy Surgeons
- The Manuscript Content Should Be Comparable to a Similar Textbook Chapter
- Content Should Be Primarily Directed to General Surgeons & Surgery Residents
- Any & All Relevant ABSITE Material Should Be Included
- No Abstracts or Conclusions
- It is the Author’s Responsibility to Avoid Any Copyright Violations Which are Prohibited and Will Not Be Tolerated by the Operative Review of Surgery
Page Format
- Use Microsoft Word .doc or .docx
- There are No Other Specific Formatting Requirements
- The O.R. Will Format Articles to Our Specifications Upon Acceptance
Article Length
- There is no Technical Minimum or Maximum Length for Articles
- Articles Should Be Long Enough to Warrant Their Own Discussion
- Articles that are Too Long May Be Better Served as Multiple Articles Depending on the Topic – Left to the Discretion of the Authors and Editors
- All Relevant Material Regarding the Topic Should Be Covered
Figures/Images
- Format: JPEG, .jpg
- Size: Submit the Largest Size Available, We Will Condense Images to the Appropriate Size for Online Viewing
- Include the Image Where it Belongs in the Manuscript, Including a Description
- Include the Appropriate Reference within the References Section:
- The End of the Reference Should Include the License; Ex. (License: CC BY-NC-4.0) or (License: Public Domain)
- Good Resources to Find Available Images:
- Open Access Images: https://openi.nlm.nih.gov
- Wikimedia Commons: https://commons.wikimedia.org
- All Figures/Images Must Be Either from the Author Themselves, Available Under a Creative Commons License, or Available Under Public Domain
- Published Figures/Images that Maintain a Copyright Must First Obtain Official Written Approval from the Publisher Prior to Submission
Mnemonics
- Include Any Relevant Mnemonics at the End of the Review, Before the References Section
- The Primary Manuscript Sections Will Be Linked to the Mnemonic Section Where Appropriate

- Follow AMA Style
- No Minimum or Maximum Number of References
- Everything Should Be Referenced Appropriately as if You Were Writing a Textbook or “Traditional” Journal Article
- When Providing a Reference for a Figure/Image or Table: The End of the Reference Should Include the License; Ex. (License: CC BY-NC-4.0) or (License: Public Domain)
Become an Official Subject Contributor
You do not need to be an official “contributor” to submit or publish articles with us. Single-article submissions are openly accepted and encouraged. Motivated authors can apply for a leadership position as an official Subject Contributor. Any subject topic is open: “Pediatric Surgery Contributor”, “Trauma Surgery Contributor”, etc. If you are interested, simply reach out and let us know. Email us at team@operativereview.com.
Requirements:
- Publish 3 Topic Articles within the Subject Field
- Provide Minor Periodic Updates Every 1-2 Months Throughout the Course of an Academic Year to Other Pages
